Project closer to completion

The one-month long pipe installation project is now entering it's third month.

Residents living at Lily Informal Settlement in Meadowlands have been waiting for a water pipe installation project, that began in May to reach completion.

The project, which was scheduled for completion over a month, is now entering its third month.

The contractor’s site agent Nhlanhla Matobole said the delay is caused by Johannesburg Water (JW) as the contractor has finished their part of the project.

“We’re waiting on JW to confirm a date to close the water in the area so we can install the pipes. Our job is done and the pipe installation has been approved by a JW inspector and an engineer,” said Matobole.

The project was to address the demand for water and waste management systems, which outnumbers the supply.

It aimed to increase the water supply for more than 300 residents in an estimated 159 households within the informal settlement, who have been sharing one tap and seven toilets for several years.

Councillor Sphiwe Mbongo says the project is the first step taken to improve living conditions of residents.

“We aim to provide toilets after the completion of the current project. We apologise to residents for the delay.” he said.
