DA regards Megatong as worst school in Soweto

Records show that the school was recommended to be shut down in 2008.

With no running water, working sanitation and no electricity for staff and pupils to use and only broken windows and doors and dilapidated structures, Mapetla based Megatong Primary School is regarded as the worst school in Soweto by the DA.

According to DA Member of Parliament Khumo Ramulifho: “This school is by far worst than an animal kraal or pigsty, this is a real sign of refusing children better and quality education and yet the government is alleging to be investing in the future of the children.

“How are we investing in the future of children if they are exposed to coldness, hunger and lack of education material and opportunities which they rightfully deserve.”

Martha Nkosi a parent with a child registered at the school said: “I only saw and got exposed to the bad condition of the school after my child was registered at the school and there was no school which would take him because it was already late.

“I’ll make sure that by next year I get him a better school because there is no future for him at this school.”

According to the information from Department of Education it shows that the school was recommended for closure in 2008 and it was supposed to have merged with Sediba Thutu Primary School and that’s why there is no budget allocated to the school.

Another parent, Luci Mnguni said: “When we visited the school to register our children, we were not informed about all this, instead we were told that the school will be revamped and cleaned and most of us believed that as we wanted to get our children education.”

Ramulifho said: “We questioned the education department and they said the school will be revamped in June and even the lights will be connected, but last week when we went to check, nothing was done, so it means they gave us empty promises.”

Attempt to get comment from the school was unsuccessful.
