Update: Pupils protest for tablets

Learning disrupted at various schools as pupils demand tablets.

Today thousands of pupils from schools in Orlando East and Diepkloof took to the streets demanding that they be given tablets like Grade 12s.

Schooling was disrupted in various schools as pupils were forced to get out of their classes and join the march.

At this moment it is not clear which school started the protest but some of the pupils involved said it started in one of the schools in Diepkloof.

Orlando Secondary School and Noordgersig High School retaliated by throwing stones when their counterparts tried to get them out of school.

Their plan was to take a train to Pretoria where they would deliver their memorandum to the Department of Basic Education.

Police managed to contain the situation before it got out of hand as pupils were blocking Mooki Street causing traffic.

They barricaded the road threatening to stone a Rea Vaya bus because the driver hooted at them.

A bakkie carrying bread was looted on Mooki Street.

One of the teachers from Orlando secondary sustained minor injuries from a stone thrown during the confrontation.

Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has issued a statement: “condemning in the strongest terms the disruption of schooling caused by members of the Congress of South African Students (Cosas) in the Soweto and Mamelodi area.”

The statement goes on to say the Departmemt has noted reports of intimidation caused by Cosas members.

“MEC Lesufi is disappointed in the conduct of Cosas this morning as this goes against the agreement the MEC had with the leadership of Cosas not to engage in any illegal activities during their marches,” reads the statement from the department. .
