Taxi driver shot dead
A 29-year old taxi driver was allegedly shot dead by a commuter on the Soweto Highway in Mzimhlophe, Soweto. The motive for the shooting is unknown.
Police spokesperson constable Thuli Ngwenya said no witnesses were found on scene when police arrived.
“Details of what happened are sketchy. On arrival, the driver who died instantly after being shot in the chest, was alone in the taxi.
“The taxi owner confirmed that the incident was not associated with any taxi violence and the deceased’s belongings were found in his possession so it wasn’t a case of robbery. We’re puzzled.” said Ngwenya.
Ngwenya said the incident happened after 7pm on the Soweto Highway when the taxi was on its way to town from Meadowlands.
Police are searching for the gunman and pleading with passengers who were in the taxi and witnessed the incident to come forward with information.
