Gauteng MEC for Education visits Diepkloof

MEC Panyaza Lesufi appalled at treatment of patients by nurses.

The Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi held an imbizo at the Diepkloof Multipurpose Hall, to share progress made on the implementation of the provincial government’s 10 pillar programme of action aimed at radically transforming, modernising and re-industrialising Gauteng.

“Let me restate the 10 pillars which constitute the core mandate of the fifth administration:

  • Radical economic transformation
  • Decisive spatial transformation
  • Accelerating social transformation
  • Transformation of the State and governance
  • Modernisation of the economy
  • Modernisation of the public service and the state
  • Modernisation of human settlements and urban development
  • Modernisation of public transport and other infrastructure
  • Re-industrialising Gauteng as our country’s economic hub
  • Taking a lead in Africa’s new industrial revolution

“These 10 pillars constitute a vehicle through which we seek to transform, modernise and reindustrialise Gauteng in order to build a seamlessly integrated, socially cohesive, economically inclusive City region; a leading economy on the African continent, with smart, innovation-driven, knowledge-based and sustainable industries; an accountable, responsive, transparent and clean government; as well as an active citizenry.

“This is our vision,” said Lesufi.

Highlighting some of the grievances residents shared with him during the walkabout, MEC Lesufi said he was hurt, at some of the things he saw.

“We cannot allow elderly people to wake up early in the morning, just to get medical attention.

“Nurses are not even able to greet patients.”

“Patients complained they were not being attended to for hours because health care staff “took long tea breaks at the same time”.

“Instead of starting the queue with number one she [the nurse] skipped to the fifth person and she told me she is sick and tired of dealing with people and long queues,”, he said.

Lesufi said he was disappointed to experience this and he would make sure this is investigated.
