Tombstones damaged at cemetery

Three similar cases have been reported at the Dobsonville Police Station.

Over 30 gravestones were vandalised at the Dobsonville Cemetery next to Shoprite Usave.

It is still unclear as to what may have led to the vandalising of the gravestone – but no marked stones were stolen of all that were damaged.

All the stones, situated near the entrance, have been smashed.

Matome Ramahuma. resident, whose wife’s tombstone (Mokgadi Margaret Ramahuma, grave NO 24) was destroyed, is apprehensive about who should fix all vandalised tombstones.

“It is not that they get stolen, they’re just broken into pieces to cause us pain,” said Matome.

Matome said R9, 743 was spent on his late wife’s tombstone – money which he doesn’t have anymore.

He said: “People must rest in peace and their graves should be protected by the cemetery management because we paid to have them laid there.

Dobsonville Police communications officer Mzwakhe Xazi said three similar cases were reported and that investigations are ongoing.
