School holidays programme keeps children off the streets

300 to 350 pupils have been participating in the programme daily.

Hundreds of children took part in the school holidays programme which wrapped up on Friday.

The event held at the Nike Centre in Pimville was organised by various departments within the City of Joburg.

The programme was aimed at making sure children are kept safe during school holidays.

This was done by educating them about different issues like water and fire safety, road safety, health, animals and drug abuse.

JMPD, Joburg Water, Joburg Zoo, SANCA, Department of Health, Grassroots Soccer, Emergency Management Services and the Department of Education took part in the programme.

Tshidiso Monareng from the JMPD Community Outreach Programme said, “The aim of the programme was to get children off the streets and get them occupied during the school holidays.”

Children who participated in the programme were from schools from Pimville, Eldorado Park and surrounding areas.

The programme was targeted at pupils from primary to high schools.

“300 to 350 pupils have been participating in the programme every day since it started,” said Monareng.

Indigenous and other educational games were played to promote the culture of healthy living among pupils.

Monareng said, “The programme could have not come at the right time than the winter season which experiences a lot of fire related accidents.

“Fire safety education gives them tips on how to avoid fire related accidents and what to do to in case of a fire emergency.”
