Finance MEC visits Protea South

Barbara Creecy concerned about illegal electricity connections

MEC of finance, Barbara Creecy visited Protea South Informal Settlement yesterday to assess service delivery and the challenges faced in the community.

Throughout the assessment, Creecy discovered that households that haven’t got electricity yet are connecting illegally which is a concern to her because it is not safe.

“I am very concerned about the illegal connections because it is not safe at all, serious measures need to be taken fast,” said Creecy.

Although there are some illegal connections, some households are legally connected and the residents are happy because it saves them money.

“The electricity that we have is good because after five years of living without electricity, I can now save money because our prepaid is not expensive compared to the paraffin I was using,” said Portia Masingi who is a resident.

Creecy also went to Chiawelo Clinic where she was pleased with the services they offer and the implementations they have for providing a better health care.

She was however, not welcomed at the Protea SAPS as the station commander “wasn’t ready” for her visit.
