Broken toilets add to the woes at Joburg Hospital

Hospital visitors horrified at state of toilets at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Parktown.

Broken and filthy toilets have now added to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital’s woes.

The Parktown based hospital has been receiving negative public attention regarding its cleanliness.

Patients and visitors at the hospital have expressed disgust at the state of toilets in the facility, saying they are either filthy or blocked.

Prudence Botes, a visitor at the hospital said, “Having been at the hospital all day, I needed to use the public toilets a few times, and quite honestly they are beyond disgusting.

“One would imagine this would be the first area where hygiene and infection control is implemented. Light bulbs are missing, leaving many in total darkness.”

“The toilet seats are cracked wonderful for collecting germs, with no soap and no toilet paper,” she said.

Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson, Steve Mabona said, “Management is aware of the broken toilets.

“Of the 1 200 toilets in the facility, five (5) percent have been reported through the call centre.

“Some of the broken parts like flush masters and cracked seats will be repaired this week, including some pipes which were stolen,” said Mabona.

A toilet in area 557 is was a in poor condition, with seats missing and no paper .
