Public transport hikes prices

Rea Vaya and Metrorail commuters were slapped with a fare increase of between 30cents and R38 as of July 1.

Commuters of Rea Vaya and Metrorail are urged to take advantage of discounts in weekly and monthly ticket prices and off-peak travel as fare prices have increased.

Rea Vaya increased its fares by 6%, ranging between 30 cents and 80 cents while Metrorail implemented a hike between 50 cents and R38.

“The increase is based on the rise in bus operating expenses such as fuel price, tyres, driver wages and maintenance. The council of the City of Johannesburg increases tariffs to keep fares in line with inflation.” said Rea Vaya spokesperson Benny Mokgoga.

“Passengers can get 10% off when they travel during off-peak times. The City is in the process to launch new fare products where passengers will be able to earn loyalty points.” added Mokgoga.

PETROL INCREASES AS RAND WEAKENS

The Department of energy said the increase in the prices of all the petroleum products is due mainly to the weakening of the Rand against the US Dollar.

As of yesterday, July 1 petrol price increased by up to 44 cents per litre while diesel was hiked by 4 cents.

Paraffin costs between 6 cents and 8 cents more.

The department urged motorists to continue implementing fuel efficiency measures, such as using public transport and utilising lift clubs whenever possible to ensure that they save fuel.
