‘Let’s support youth empowerment programmes’

The Department of Community Safety has established about 92 Youth Crime Prevention Desks located in all the 142 police stations across Gauteng.

Busi Kheswa from the Department of Community Safety, said yearly, communities are reminded of the patriotism and selfless sacrifice the class of 1976 made to the democracy this country enjoys today.

Kheswa said the youth of today are challenged with the unnerving task of having to confront the triple challenges of inequality, poverty and unemployment.

“Often these challenges push the youth into abusing drugs, particularly nyaope, and resort to crime to feed their habits.

“This requires a country to strengthen advocacy for youth to actively participate in the fight against crime,” she said.

The Department of Community Safety has established about 92 Youth Crime Prevention Desks located in all the 142 police stations across Gauteng.

These range from community audits, school safety programmes, sports against crime, debates and dialogues on safety.

Kheswa said there is also a need for all youth formations to be involved in the promotion of safety of their communities by participating and developing safety initiatives.

“Let us support all youth empowerment programmes to ensure that the country becomes safer for all,” said Kheswa.
