Pledging support in the fight against drugs

Drug Watch re-launched.

International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was held on Friday and to raise awareness Sharing Without Shame (SWS) encouraged active citizenry by pledging your support.

An event was held at Crystal Ministries where Yusuf Abramjee head of news and current affairs at Primedia, 702 talk show host John Robbie, MMC Nonceba Molwele and Andy Mashaile chairman of the community police board, pledged their support.

Drug Watch was launched two years ago with CrimeLine and Lead South Africa where citizens could make anonymous tip-offs to police.

“It was very successful, at one stage the stock of drugs ran dry,” Abramjee said. He said the problem lied with the criminal justice system where people who were arrested weren’t convicted.

“That is our worry, our target should not be the user, our target should be the drug dealers and manufacturers.

“This time with Drug Watch we are putting a lot of emphasis to make sure we get to the guys who are dealing in drugs and manufacturers,” said Abramjee.

He said that would be a critical part of the public to blow the whistle.

A special team of police have been appointed to deal with the tip-offs of drug dealers.

Once a tip-off is received, it is the onus of the police to act on it.

“The only way we’ll get to the big fish is if the police do their investigations properly, they cant just pounce on a house,” Abramjee said.

SWS is hoping to reach one million pledges with Gauteng being the leading province.
