Women taking back their surroundings

Ongoing maintenance by residents after 25 years of no cleaning.

Ladies from Extension Four, who are all over 50, have decided to clean a walkway that has been vacant and used as a dump site for over 20 years.

They say they feel failed by the council.

The ladies plan on revamping the area to a public vegetable garden, soccer field and park.

“We asked the boys who sit around to help us but unfortunately they didn’t help.

“We have been working here for three weeks but the ground is so hard, we would get more done if they help us,” Romain Alves said.

They also request for a tractor and gardening tools as it would make work for them much easier.

The vacant land is also a hotspot for crime, according to the women.

They spoke to people at the neighbouring flats to stop littering in the veld  and make use of the bins provided.

“Rats as big as cats would run up our walls,” another resident said.

The flats are also without lights, an electricity box is sealed closed with black plastic bags and thick tape and wires are exposed.

The ladies are hoping to start growing vegetables with the help of sponsorship with seeds.
