Rebels retain title

Westbury celebrate June 16 with Steven Pienaar at the tournament finals with jam packed grounds.

The finals of the Steven Pienaar tournament took place on Tuesday, June 16.

It was a packed Oval Stadium waiting to see some exciting games.

There were three finals that took place.

The under 17 final saw Ngwato All Stars beat Westbury Spurs 1-0 and the LFA final saw Benfica beat Westbury Spurs 1-0.

Rebels FC victorious.

 

The big “R50 000” final was Rebels who are defending champions, take on surprise finalists Starling United.

It was a really tough match between two really good teams and the result says it all.

The match went into extra time with the score on 3-3 after 90 minutes.

Extra time did not produce any goals so the champions were decided on penalties but it was defending champions, Rebels who prevailed 5-4 to retain the Steven Pienaar Community Cup.

Steven Pienaar was also present and happy with the turnout.

“We have to focus on local talent because sometimes these players from the townships do not get the exposure they need,” said Pienaar.

Soccer fans braved the cold towatch the Steven Pienaar Tournament.
