Pupils celebrate #YouthDay with poetry and music

Youth Day celebrated by teaching children about their history.

Tlhokomkelo Drop in Centre, a non-profit organisation which takes care of vulnerable and orphaned children joined the whole country in honouring the class of 1976 yesterday.

The Orlando East based non-profit organisation celebrated Youth Day with Music and Poetry praising and thanking the class of 76 for their courage.

Pupils from Thembalihle Primary School, Job Rathebe Junior Secondary School and Ditawana Primary School came together and entertained their parents and the community with music and poetry.

Pauline Kgobe who is project manager at the Tlokomelo Drop in Centre said, “We wanted to educate children about the importance of this day and its impact in their lives.”

Children who took part in the celebration are the beneficiaries of the centre.

They come to the centre every day after school for food.

“We don’t want to be a place where children just come for food. We felt that it is important that we make them aware of their history and what happened on this day.

“It is important for pupils to know what this country achieved through the activities of June 16, so that they can be inspired to make their contribution in shaping this country one day,” said Kgobe.

The celebration was one of many which took place yesterday in honouring the class of 76 for standing up against the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction at schools.
