No power, ineffective generators

The batteries and wires have been allegedly stolen from generators provided by City Power.

Extension Eight has been without electricity since Monday due to an overload from one of the boxes supplying power to the area.

Councillor Michelle Valentine said the overload is a result of illegal connections but residents dispute this.

Generators have been supplied for the area but have, according to residents, supplied power for only a few hours.

Residents burnt tyres, blocking the Main Road but were quickly dispersed by police on Tuesday.

They again took to the streets on Friday evening, blocking the Main Road from about 7pm.

They vowed to keep it closed until power is restored.

Rooshan Buys, a matriculant, said having no electricity is affecting her studying.

“We are busy with mid-year exams but I can’t study as much as I would like to because it gets dark.

“It isn’t easy to study by candlelight so I have to wake up extra early to go over my work,” Buys said.

Residents complain about having to wash with cold water, warm water over fires to make bottles for their children and cook.

The generators supplied by City Power have since been vandalised, batteries and wires have been stolen from them.

Power was restored last Friday evening.

Police were on high alert Friday evening.
