Child Protection Week (CPW) is in full swing and Kliptown police have joined in on the commemorations.
Yesterday, the police, Youth Desk and the Isibindi Project came together to raise awareness about the protection of children.
They did this by visiting two primary schools in the Kliptown SAPS policing area.
Schools visited were St Peter Claver Primary School in Pimville and Firethorn Primary School Klipspruit West.
The aim of the visit was to teach children about their rights and build relations with them as police.
Awareness was raised about issues that children might be facing at their homes and schools.
CPW is commemorated annually to raise awareness about children’s rights. It is an initiative driven by government and the Department of Social Development.
The commemoration was launched in 1997 with an aim of encouraging all sectors and citizens of this country to ensure the safety and care of children. Children’s rights are articulated in the Children’s Act of 2005.
The act seeks to protect the child from maltreatment, abuse, neglect, degradation, discrimination, exploitation and other physical, emotional or moral harm.
South Africans from all walks of life are encouraged to look after children not only this week by every day.
