Member of the Mayoral Committee for Finance, Geoffrey Makhubo announced the budget for the City of Joburg’s 2015/16 financial year on Tuesday at the Sandton Convention Centre.
Makhubo said the City is committed to lead the transformation of spaces residents live, work and play in.
He said the City’s Growth and Development Strategy, Joburg 2040 sets out four outputs which are translated to 10 priority programmes aimed at tackling the challenges faced by Joburgers.
The key priorities which aim to ensure that the City achieves a sustainable, resilient and liveable society are:
- Financial Sustainability
- Affordable and sustainable human settlements
- Agriculture and food security
- SMME and entrepreneurship development and support;
- Active and engaged citizenry
- Resource resilience
- Investment attraction, retention and expansion;
- Green economy
BUDGET ALLOCATION:
- R25.9-billion has been allocated for the Sustainable Services Cluster operation, which oversees and coordinates the bulk of the City’s service delivery obligations.
The cluster includes Housing, Environment and Infrastructure Services.
- The operating budget of the Human and Social Development Cluster amounts to R6.3-billion for the 2015/16 financial year.
- The Economic Growth Cluster operating budget allocation amounts to R4.4- billion and a three year capital budget allocation of R11.9-billion. This cluster plays a lead role in the implementation of the Corridors of Freedom.
- The Good Governance Cluster is allocated an operating budget of R7.8-billion for 2015/16 financial year. This cluster is responsible for ensuring that the city is a high-performing metropolitan government that pro-actively contributes to the Gauteng City Region.
