Law getting tougher for scrapyards

Moroka Police to fight against the buying of stolen properties by scrapyards owners.

Midway Industrial sector is the main target for Moroka Police in their fight against crime and buying of stolen properties by scrapyards owners.

Moroka Police communications officer John Serala said that there have been several cases relating to scrapyards that are not cooperating with police during investigations and in the fight against crime.

“We have been emphasising that alone as officers we will never win the fight against crime in all the areas we are policing.

“We will make sure that they get involved and help us during crime investigation and by complying with the law because it has come to our attention that there are still scrapyard owners who buy stolen goods – despite our many meetings with them.”

Serala said most of the cases reported invo;ve stolen stainless steel which is sold for quick cash.

“Cases of stolen house numbers, pots, burglars and other steel materials are the ones that are reported mostly at our station and we want to stop that from happening.

“We urge the scrapyard owners to work with us and ensure that they comply and don’t buy any stolen goods.”

Residents who are willing to help the police fight crime are urged to contact the station on 011 527 0000.
