Condoms for primary school pupils

Proposal faces criticism from parents.

Primary school pupils could soon be getting condoms at schools.

This is after the Department of Education released its draft national policy on HIV, STI’s and TB, last Tuesday.

According to the draft policy, condoms will be available to all pupils, teachers, school support and officials in the basic education sector.

The proposals, especially those for primary school pupils are included in the plan and had mixed reactions from parents.

Sibongile Lamola (38), a parent, said that she wasn’t comfortable with her 10-year-old daughter being given condoms.

“I asked my child about sex and right now she knows nothing.

“If she is given condoms she will want to know more.”

Another parent, Refiloe Molemo (26), said, “In primary school the pupils are still babies, who need a chance to grow.

“We should be teaching them sport, not sex.”

Melisa Setlhako (41) thinks that the policy is a good one.

“Today’s children don’t need to be taught about sex because they already know about it,” said Setlhako.
