It has been celebrated on May 12 every year since 1965.
May 12 is the anniversary date of the birth of Florence Nightingale.
Nightingale is regarded as the founder of modern nursing. International Nurses Day seeks to celebrate and recognise the role played by nurses in our society.
On this day awareness about the dangers nurses face every day is raised as well. Information about the nursing profession is distributed on this day to encourage young people to consider it as their career of choice.
Nursing is regarded as the largest health care profession and expected to play a pivotal role in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
The theme for this year’s celebration is; Nurses: A force for change, care effective, cost effective.
