New law to protect children

Drivers who do not buckle up children under the age of three, will be fined.

As of this month, drivers and parents who do not strap their children who are under the age of three into a car seat, will be brought to book.

This is according to the new regulation in the National Road Traffic Act.

According to deputy director for the Gauteng Traffic Police Busaphi Nxumalo, the law applies to all private vehicles on public roads.

She said: “Traffic officers will soon start to charge all motorists who don’t comply with the new rule as this has been set to save our children.

“We expect children under three-years-old to be buckled  up at the back seat of the car.

“This is because most children are thrown out of the car when it is involved in an accident.”

Drivers and parents who do not comply with the regulation will be fined up to R500.

“Law enforcement agencies will soon start with doing their work of giving notices if the drivers and parents who do not comply.

“Public transport vehicles however, won’t have the child restraints in their vehicles,” she said.
