Hostel violently protests allocation of Community Residential Units

Hostel residents barricade roads against allocation of Community Residential Units.

The handing over of house keys to four beneficiaries at the Diepkloof Hostel was curbed, as the hostel residents protested against the allocation of Community Residential Units.

The four beneficiaries at the hostel are part of the 60 families who were urgently moved from dilapidated and uninhabitable units to the Temporary Residential Units (TRUs).

Mayhem erupted this morning when hostel residents disagreed with the move to allocate non hostel residents 56 of the 60 TRUs.

Police and JMPD members had to use rubber bullets to disperse the angry residents who barricaded Martius Drive and Chris Hani Road.

Mxolisi Thusini, the Induna (hostel chief) at the hostel was very happy about the suspension of the handover of keys.

“How can we be expected to accept this, when only four beneficiaries from the hostel will get the houses.

“The residents of the hostel must get first preference to getting the houses, not people from the location,” he said.

A traumatised Nosonto Galela, one of the four beneficiaries said: “Police came to our TRU and opened fire.

“We were told to leave our houses.

“I can not understand why were we forced to leave our house.”

In the process Nosonto’s daughter Simangele Galela was shot twice and taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath for treatment.

MMC for Housing in the City of Joburg, Councillor Dan Bovu was present and said the allocation will be postponed to a later date.

Traffic is normal again in the area after hostel residents had blocked roads earlier today.

JMPD is monitoring the situation.
