Applications of Smart IDs at banks moved to May

The Department of Home Affairs says the pilot project will run from May to July.

The Department of Home Affairs has moved its plans of Smart ID Card applications to be done at banks from April to May.

This comes after the Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba had said in February that as of April, South African citizens would be able to apply for Smart ID Cards at Home Affairs stalls at their nearest banks.

Gigaba said this meant that people would be able to go to the banks’ Home Affairs stand, submit all their applications, take their photograph, submit their fingerprints, give their electronic signature and this will then be compiled to an electronic package and deposited to Home Affairs.

The department said the minor delays are due to security checks, however, they are ready to pilot this new project.

Mpho Moloi of the department said all system are in place to roll out the project.

He said that First National Bank and Stand Bank had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding and have provided them with a site each and at those places they had already installed phone booths and were testing the eChannel System to ensure that it can withstand the security requirements.

Moloi said the pilot project will run from May to July and in August an assessment will be done to see its progress.
