Portuguese Ambassador donates books to a school

Portuguese language to be taught at Protea Glen Secondary School.

Portuguese Ambassador, Antonio Ricoca Freire donated about 100 Portuguese language books to Protea Glen Secondary School on April 20.

The Portuguese Ambassador was accompanied by a delegation of diplomats which comprised of the Education Councillor Rui de Azevedo, the Minister Councillor Ana Brito Maneira, and the Consul General of Portugal at Johannesburg Luisa Fragoso,

The donation will be followed by the teaching of Portuguese at the school with immediate effect as a subject at Protea Glen Secondary.

Ricoca addressed the school by outlining the importance of the Portuguese language which is the official language of nine countries in the world, six of them being in Africa namely Angola, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guine Bissau ,Mozambique and Sao Tomé.

He said that Portuguese is an official language of the African Union and of South African Development Community (SADC).

“It is a language spoken in Southern Africa in Angola and Mozambique and also spoken in South Africa by millions of people.

“It is a language that is useful in trade relations and is spoken in the four corners of the world,” said Ricoca.
