Eskom to act harshly on non-paying municipalities

According to Eskom, the top 20 defaulting municipalities currently indebted to them amount to R3.68 billion.

Residents should prepare themselves for more possible changes from Eskom, as in addition to the scheduled load shedding currently taking place and price increase, the power utilities company is planning on taking harsher action in the top 20 non-paying municipalities.

Eskom said, it is considering interrupting bulk electricity supply to the top 20 defaulting municipalities across the country and should this plan be successful, it will commence on June 5.

The company said the top 20 defaulting municipalities currently indebted to them amount to R3.68 billion for bulk supply of electricity.

Eskom said, the non-paying of electricity undermines its constitutional obligation to generate and supply of electricity to all municipalities, which is why they have to take action.

It said it is aware this decision may cause difficulty for residents, but customer disconnection is always the last resort.

Eskom said it will give more details of these defaulting municipalities by the end of the month.
