Minister concerned with fatalities on the roads

Statistics show an increase in road fatalities over the Easter holidays this year.

Transport minister Dipuo Peters has expressed her concern with what she calls the “fragrant disregard of the law.”

The minister on Wednesday released road accidents statistics for the Easter holidays.

It emerged that this year 208 accidents resulted in 287 fatalities.

This is an increase compared to last year where there were only 148 accidents with 198 fatalities.

The minister said those who lose their lives on the roads are people whose potential could play a vital role in building the economy and moving the country forward.

The biggest number of people who lost their lives on the roads were passengers followed by drivers and pedestrians.

Speeding, unroadworthy vehicles and driving under the influence of alcohol are still the most prevalent risks associated with road fatalities.

Fatigue was not left out as one of the risks associated with accidents as 37% of accidents happened between 6pm and midnight.

The heaviest volumes of traffic were recorded on the N1 and N3 leaving the province of Gauteng to Limpopo and KwaZulu Natal over the Easter weekend.
