Rand Water launches river cleaning project

River cleaning project is aimed at eradicating pollution.

The Rand Water Foundation (RWF) launched a river cleaning project at the Klip River in Orlando West.

The river cleaning project is aimed at eradicating pollution on the Klip River and also testing the river’s water quality.

The pupils of Selelekela and Emadwaleni High School assisted in the river cleaning.

“Our aim is to involve high schools that are situated nearby, to empower pupils with knowledge and to encourage them to take ownership of their environment,” said Rand Water Foundation’s general manager Mohlatleho Sekoaila.

The river cleaning project is a three year undertaking where Rand Water will conduct water quality assessments and record them on the Orange-Senqu River Commission website which stores and displays data obtained during water quality assessments of a river or streams.

“We found that if it were to be left to continue, pollution of the Klip River will eventually manifest itself downstream of the Vaal River, where Rand Water abstracts and purifies it’s water,” said Sekoaila.

Rand Water Foundation believes that the effective implementation of the river cleaning project will reduce litter and assist in improving the overall condition in the Klip River.
