Another blow for Medupi

Workers down tools over living conditions and pay.

Power utility Eskom has yet experienced another challenge amid power shortages.

The construction of the new power station in Limpopo was hit by strike action last week Thursday.

Over 2000 contract workers went on strike over living conditions and better pay.

The one day strike forced Eskom to close the site at the Medupi Power Station.

There were reports of damage to property by striking workers.

Striking workers were locked outside the station. The National Union of Metalworkers said it was prepared to go to court to force Eskom to let them in so they can get paid at the end of the month.

According to latest reports some of the workers have been fired for embarking on the illegal strike.

Those fired are reported to have had previous records against them. Unit six of the Medupi Power Station produced electricity for the first time at the beginning of this month even though it was not complete.

Medupi is one of three large-scale power stations the power utility is building to reduce electricity shortages.

The project has been frequently delayed due to labour unrest and technical glitches. The coal fired station will be the first power station built in the country in 20 years.
