Independent Living Centre launched in Mofolo

People living with disabilities helped to live independently.

The Independent Living Centre which is a Non-Government Organisation that seeks to assist physically disabled people to live independently has officially been launched in Mofolo.

According to coordinator of the centre, Muzi Nkosi, there are a lot of people who are released from hospital due to accidents that have made them physically challenged, but then they don’t know where to go for help.

Nkosi said those people tend to lose hope and think that they can’t work and go to school as disabled people, however, this is not true.

He said: “Our centre provides Soweto people that are physically challenged with peer counselling, personal assistance programme and support groups to help them with the challenges they face as we have different disabilities.

“Through these services, we are building the self-esteem of the disabled.

“We also help people that are living with physical disability with no one to assist them, so they can find someone to support them.”

Nkosi said their appeal to the community is that if they have challenges with people living with disabilities or if they  seek information about this, they should visit their organisations that are willing to help or refer them to the relevant people.

For more information residents contact Nkosi on 082 773 7681.
