Centre for disabled launches branch in Meadowlands

ILC to open a branch in Meadowlands to reach out to more disabled people in communities.

The Independent Living Centre is launching a branch in Meadowlands Zone Seven in an attempt to reach more disabled individuals and offer support and motivation.

Nathan Tshabalala, member of ILC said the organisation will host support groups at the Methodist Church where the disabled community gathers to discuss life and challenges individuals are faced with.

“We also hope to eliminate the stigma and discrimination against disabled people while motivating them to do more in life as disability cannot stop you from living” said Tshabalala who became disabled after a car accident in 2003.

“I would lock myself in the house and be ashamed that I was now sitting in a wheelchair.”

Tshabalala’s life took a turn when he met a blind wheelchair user: “Seeing him made me fight against the urge to self-pity myself. I became motivated.”

The organisation is encouraging disabled people from all ages to join the support group when they launch next month.

“Transport, refreshments and lunch are offered at no charge to attendees,” he said.
