Easter holiday tips by Moroka police

Residents urged to increase security in their homes this Easter.

It is that time of the year again where residents normally leave their homes for Easter holidays and church celebrations and to visit their relatives from afar.

For this reason, the Moroka police are urging residents to increase security in their homes so they don’t become victims of crime.

Police’s John Serala said that at this time of the year there is normally an increase in house breaking which is always concerning to them.

“During the Easter holidays, most of our residents go away for days or weeks for the holidays and leave no one to look after their homes.

“We also find that the houses that are broken into have no or minimal security, they are not guarded by any one or dogs and the lights remain off for days.

“This then causes robbers to take advantage of and break into those homes,” Serala said.

He encouraged residents to ask for their family members or a neighbours they trust to look after the house during this time while they are away.

Serala said residents should also refrain from telling people that they will be away as some might break into their homes.

“Please install burglar gates, install alarms, lock your gates and use dogs in your yards as they are able to alarm neighbours if a stranger enters the yard or if something happens,” he said.
