Platform for abused men

Yze Kona provides a space for men who are victims and perpetrators of abuse.

Yze Kona (pronounced wise corner) is an organisation specifically for men who are victims or perpetrators of abuse.

“There aren’t conversations on how to better men or support them if they are being abused.

“Yze Kona is a space for men to talk and share their experience and wisdom,” Nyanda Khanyile, from the organisation said.

Speaking on the killing of Nkululeko ‘Flabba’ Habedi he said the incident highlights the need for communities to provide a space for psycho-social support for men.

The organisation offers psycho-support for men in support groups and men are transferred if they need to be referred to psychologist.

“We have come across men who abuse their partners and want to stop but don’t know how to because they have been brought up in such circumstances,” Khanyile said.

He said men are reared to be providers, suppress their emotion and to be in control.

“It’s not that men are ashamed of coming forward and saying they are being abused, it’s that they were raised to show no emotion.

“Now that there is a platform for men, we are seeing an increase in men coming forward,” said Khanyile.

In some cases men started abuse, stopped it but are still getting emotionally abused by women.
