‘Today we reached a milestone’

The house where a tragedy took place is now one of hope.

No More Victims reached a milestone on Sunday when a house was converted to a safe house by MEC of Social Development Faith Mazibuko.

“The community leaders are grateful to the department of social development for making this happen.

“We will now have structure when we have to pick up a child at 2am, now we will have somewhere to take them,” Liesl Valloo from No More Victims said.

Mazibuko said Eldorado Park should be an example to other communities.

“It’s about time Eldorado Park sheds its bad image.

“We must reach a stage where we can say there was Eldorado Park now there is Eldorado Park,” she said.

The safe house is registered to accommodate six youth with two emergency beds.

Children will stay at the safe house for a maximum of 72 hours until they can be referred to a rehabilitation centre.

It is equipped with a house mother, three staff, security guards, a car and driver.

Occupants will also be provided with basic toiletries and clothing.

The house is filled with words of wisdom and encouragement.

“This house will have a homely environment where they can watch tv and be fed,” Valloo said.

Two people were murdered in the house last year and Valloo said she is appreciative to the family who allowed them to turn a tragedy into something positive.

The safe house is equipped with a land line number 011 042 8006.
