Furniture design competition entries open

Competition aims to attract designers to the furniture industry.

Students who are in their final year of design and established designers are encouraged to enter the National Furniture Design Competition.

This year’s theme is ‘Future Public Spaces’ and there are two categories in the contest as one caters for students in their final year while the other is for already established designers.

“Aim of the competition is to attract designers to the furniture industry, to create a group of designers to serve the industry and to promote product development and differentiation.

“This industry is a significant sector in our economy and can contribute to the reduction of unemployment, increase exports and develop small medium and micro enterprises,” Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Unati Speirs said.

Those who will enter into the competition will need to submit technical drawings of their product, description of materials to be used and of the production concept behind the design.

Entries of the contest will close on August 31.

The competition is being made possible by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) along with other partners such as the South African Bureau of Standards Design Institute, Industrial Development Corporation, Furntech and MeCad Solidworks.
