Medupi Power Station produces power for the first time

Unit six of the newly built Medupi Power Station brings hope to South Africans.

Unit six of the Medupi Power Station has produced electricity for the first time.

Power utility Eskom, has announced that the much anticipated Medupi station in Limpopo is now in operation even though it is not complete yet.

Unit six of the station is expected to feed 794 megawatts of electricity to the power grid in the next three months.

This announcement may serve as a beacon of hope in a country often left in the dark because of controlled outages.

Medupi is one of three large-scale power stations the power utility is building to reduce electricity shortages.

The project has been frequently delayed due to labour unrest and technical glitches.

The coal fired station will be the first power station built in the country in 20 years.
