Growing marathon an experience for runners

The race attracted runners who wanted to give back.

The ‘biggest Eldos sporting event’ took place last Sunday when people from across Johannesburg ran for a cause.

The Township Marathon, with Gift of the Givers hosted the race to alleviate hunger.

Runner Marlin Tjale said he ran the 42km marathon to give to the poor.

“It was the first time I ran this marathon, I took part because I saw that proceeds will go to feeding hungry people,” Tjale said.

He said the experience of running through Eldorado Park and Lenasia was good because he has never seen the areas.

“The crowds made the marathon good,” said Tjale.

Athletes said the route was a nice, easy and flat one.

Karen James said the race was something different.

“I got to see things that I don’t see when I ran through certain townships,” she said.

Over 3500 athletes partook in the various races, over 8000 people and athletes were fed and more than 1000 food parcels were given.
