DA condemns growing number of illegal dumping sites in Mapetla

Illegal dumping condemned in Mapetla.

Democratic Alliance Soweto Constituency has visited Mapetla area as one of its programmes in driving community issues and assessing service delivery within the wards.

The aim of the visit was also to encourage residents to participate in community development issues.

The visit was lead by DA PR Councillor Makatisane Papo who said the situation needs an urgent attention.

“This is a dire situation and needs serious attention from the councillor and health inspectors, worst part is that the illegal dumping site is next to a high school where children are supposed to stay healthy and free from sicknesses,” said Papo.

During the interaction with residents, DA activists were received well by some ward 16 residents.

“In terms of municipal by-laws illegal dumping must be reported and penalties must be issued by JMPD officers; however, this has not implemented.

“DA will like to urge Mapetla residents not to dump illegally because it has negative environmental impact and is a health hazard to the community in particular children.”

Papo promised that the DA will be engaging with residents in the affected ward on how best they can work together in dealing with community issues such as illegal dumping and others in particular.

“DA in ward 16 will be exploring initiatives and sustainable plans that will involve community members as key role players in solution to their own community issues through correct channels,” said Papo.
