Smart ID applications to be done at banks

As of April South African citizens will be able to apply for Smart ID Cards at their nearest banks.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba announced this week that as of April, South African citizens would be able to apply for Smart ID Cards at Home Affairs stalls in their nearest banks.

He said this meant that a person will be able to go to the banks Home Affairs stand, submit all their applications, take their photograph, submit their fingerprints and give their electronic signature.

All this will then be complied to an electronic package and deposited to Home Affairs.

Gigaba said that this would be a pilot project and that to date, FNB and Standard Bank had signed a memorandum of understanding with the department for the project, while Nedbank has on the other hand indicated its willingness to come on board.

The minister said he hopes Absa will also join in on the partnership soon and that they had also approached the South African Post Office so Home Affairs can use some of its infrastructure.
