Mbuyisa Makhubu’s family remembers him on his birthday

Mbuyisa Makhubu celebrates his 57th birthday in absentia.

Mbuyisa Makhubu’s family celebrated his 57th birthday yesterday outside Mbuyisa Makhubu Primary School in Orlando West.

Mbuyisa has been missing since 1978 after he fled to exile after carrying the lifeless body of Hector Pierterson on June 16 1976.

The family intended to celebrate Makhubu’s birthday with the pupils of Mbuyisa Makhubu Primary however, according to the family the Department of  Education  denied them the opportunity to celebrate this day with the school.

“We are disappointed  that we could not share this day with the pupils of the school that our brother is named after. My mother used to sell snacks outside this school when we were children, so this school has always been close to our hearts,” said the sister of Mbuyisa, Nonakwelelo Makhubu.

She added that even though they could not share the day with the pupils they are happy to have celebrated Mbuyisa’s birthday.

“We miss him and wish that the South African government will help us bring him back,” she said.
