Wetlands Day celebrated

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo urge residents to take care of various wetlands around Soweto.

Ukhamba Development Project in conjunction with the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo celebrated Wetlands Day at Thokoza Park on Tuesday.

This day of educational activities also formed part of the celebrations of Wetlands Month which happens in February.

Numerous stalls were set up for pupils to visit and a clean-up campaign was done by staff, eco-guides and residents living near the park.

Pupils were educated on the different kinds of wetlands and their functions, their importance and on how to preserve them.

“We are celebrating this day by creating awareness for children and the community as there is a dire need to persevere our wetlands.

“There are a lot of these areas in Soweto, however, people just dump on them.

“Swamplands have a lot of benefits for us and can even help with issues of flooding but the more we litter on them is the more we negatively affect the animals and plants depending on this land,” said Sinah Magolo, manager of Environmental Education and Awareness Unit for Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo.

She encouraged residents to form wetland clubs in their areas and for them to monitor and discourage illegal action near them.
