It is believed that the man broke into the house of a woman, where he stole groceries but he was seen by the woman who immediately screamed, seeking help from the neighbours.
The man, who then started running, was caught by the mob after being stuck on top of a shack.
He was beaten by the mob but was rescued by the police who rushed out to the scene after being tipped off.
The man was rushed to Baragwanath Hospital, were he was treated for various injuries.
The Diepkloof police communications officer confirmed that the man was taken to hospital and a case of theft has been opened against him.
She also urged the community to not take the law into their own hands.
