Alleviating hunger through sports

Proceeds from the marathon will go to hungry stomachs.

The annual Township Marathon that attracts thousands of runners will be held on February 22.

Relief organisation Gift of the Givers partnered with running clubs three years ago with the aim of alleviating hunger from proceeds of the marathon.

“This year the race is in aid of hunger alleviation and we aim to feed over 6000 hungry stomachs,” Gerhard Van Wyk, an organiser said.

Residents are welcome to participate by either running or assisting with marshalling or at watering points.

“We encourage people to run to promote a culture of sport to our young people who are caught up in alcohol and drug abuse,” Van wyk said.

He said the marathon is, without a doubt, the biggest sporting event in Eldos.
