Beware scammers at Maponya Mall

Police urge shoppers to avoid speaking to people they don’t know, especially after withdrawing large amount of money from the bank.

Shoppers are being warned by the Kliptown police of a new trend at Maponya Mall, where unsuspecting victims withdrawing large amounts of money inside the bank are being robbed.

Police’s Thuli Ngwenya said: “It’s unknown how the victims are identified because immediately after that, a female culprit just appears out of nowhere and throws a roll of money in front of the victim.

“While lost in confusion of the money on the ground, the culprit then says to the victim they should both go and share the money which they both pick up.

“The culprits then lure the victim outside the mall, at the bus stop and while waiting there, an unknown vehicle just stops and robs both women at gunpoint and drive off,” she said.

Two cases of the same operation have been opened by different victims (one with R11 000 and the other one R10 000) at Kliptown Police Station and they are both being investigated.
