Residents encouraged to pay rates

Pensioners want rebates on their properties.

Soweto residents came to attend the City of Joburg’s Property Rates Policy review meeting last Saturday at Orlando Communal Hall in Orlando East.

The City has embarked on the community consultative meetings with its ratepayers in all seven regions to get their input in drafting the new rates policy.

Councillor Sicelo Cabashe encouraged the residents to pay their property rates in order to improve the quality of service delivery.

“It’s very important to pay for the rates because it’s the backbone for the revenue stream. If you don’t pay the services are affected,” said Cabashe.

The residents wanted to find out how they could get rebates on their property rates especially pensioners.

The City of Johannesburg reviews its Rates Policy on an annual basis with the purpose to determine categories of properties, which will then be rated according to a tariff.
