Protest hits Klipspruit and Extension 10

Day two without power for Klipspruit.

The entire Klipspruit and Extension 10 has been without electricity following damage to a faulty cable that was laid on Saturday.

Residents, especially children, were protesting by closing roads, demanding money from motorist and stoning passing vehicles.

“We are doing this to get Eskom’s attention,” a protester said.

A cable was apparently stolen by residents of Kliptown on Saturday and was replaced on the same day but not closed.

“When it rained, the water went into the hole where the cable was and damaged it,” Amien Kaldine from the area said.

Contractors who were to repair the wire have been waiting for a tester since 2pm yesterday, left at 11pm.

Power has not been restored to the affected areas after more than 24 hours.

Kaldine is calling on residents not to resort to violence.

Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, they retaliated by stoning passing police vehicles.

“We are fighting for the same cause but we should not be violent about it,” said Kaldine
