Prisoners awaiting trial to be put in uniform

The Department of Correctional Services hopes that uniforms will help decrease escape of prisoners.

Prisoners that are remanded or awaiting trial will soon be spotted in yellow uniform.

This according to the Department of Correctional Services, is to make sure that these inmates are more visible and to try decrease the number of escapes there are.

The uniform is also to differentiate awaiting trial prisoners from those in orange uniform that is worn by convicted prisoners.

Department spokesperson, Manelisi Wolela, said that this new uniform was launched last year during the Correctional Services Week and R31 million is expected to be used for this initiative.

He said that the department is still in the process of rolling out this new gear.
