Taking back the streets of Riverlea

Since special units were disbanded in 2004, drug related crimes have more than doubled, claims Mmusi Maimane.

Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane was joined by Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille and Gauteng provincial leader on Saturday as they marched through the streets of Riverlea.

“Today the people of Riverlea are taking back the power.

“We are here to tell the police to shut these drug dens down,” Maimane said in front of the Langlaagte police station.

He had a list of the drug dens operating in the area.

He told police that residents are fed up with ineffective policing and those who don’t respect the law.

“They are tired of not feeling safe in their own community,” Maimane said.

He said the devastation that ineffective policing leaves is found everywhere.

“No matter where you live, when drug abuse arises so does crime and violence,” said Maimane.

He has heard stories from many communities where police are involved in the problem of drugs and don’t tackle it.

He is calling for special units to be reinstated.

“Since special units were disbanded in 2004, drug related crimes have more than doubled,” Maimane said.

He urged residents to support the honourable police.
