Soweto violence currently under control

Police intend on keeping the situation calm in Soweto.

Foreign nationals who have been renting their businesses in Soweto have been experiencing looting where their shops had been broken into since Tuesday but police say the situation is currently calm.

The violent outbreaks have been said to be a response to the alleged shooting and killing of Doornkop based 15-year-old Siphiwe Mahori.

Violence erupted in Emndeni by Tuesday and spread to deep Soweto, Central, Diepkloof and Meadowlands by Wednesday.

Gauteng police head of communications, officer lieutenant general Solomon Makgale said in a statement that by Wednesday, eight firearms had been confiscated by police and by Thursday evening 11 firearms had been confiscated, 10 of which belonging to foreign nationals.

Makgale added that 121 people have been arrested to date for various crimes including attempted murder, fraud, possession of stolen property and public violence.

Makgale adds that police have maintained visibility since the outbreak of the attacks and that the situation is currently calm.

“There have been a few reports of sporadic incidences of violence in some areas but the police have it under control.

“The situation is currently calm and we intend on keeping it this way throughout the weekend until things get to a state of normality,” said Makgale.
