The Democratic Alliance (DA) PR councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba working in Wards 46, 47 and 48 which covers parts of Zola, Jabulani, Zondi and Dobsonville condemns the public violence that has hit Dobsonville and Soweto as a whole.
Sifumba says she acknowledges that a life has been lost allegedly at the hands of a Somali national and would like to express their heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.
“People in Soweto shouldn’t resort to violence. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department is supposed to enforce by-laws within the City to curtail such incidents from occurring,” she said.
Her observations in the past three days are that SAPS who are trying their level best to protect everyone have their hands full as they don’t know when and where another shop will be looted.
“This boils down to the issue of by-laws and enforcement thereof,” said Sifumba.
We would like to urge firstly the national government to;
- Look into the legality of the foreign nationals occupying these shops, do they have legal and necessary papers.
- JMPD and City of Johannesburg revisit the by-laws that are in place regarding trading within the City.
- Urge the community to refrain from looting and damaging property and allow the law to take its course.
